01/20/2014... Laurie Elyse to show novel line at Couture Fashion Week
Noted designer and artist Laurie Elyse will present her latest innovative collection at Couture Fashion Week in New York City at 8:00 pm on Friday February 14, 2014. The fashion show will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the landmark New Yorker Hotel, 481 Eighth Avenue in the heart of the Big Apple's Fashion District.
Laurie Elyse is a highly ingenious artist and designer who creates wearable, functional, and decorative pieces. Her distinctive work has been featured in magazines, galleries, restaurants, studios, private collections, and boutiques around the world, on celebrities, and even at charity auctions for the Grammy Foundation and MusiCares, Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, and many more.
Laurie Elyse graduated from The School of Visual Arts in New York City. It was there that she began to build furniture and other large scale works. With roots in the music industry, she had already been called a "creative genius" for her one-of-a-kind chandeliers crafted from recycled materials and donated broken and used items from musicians of all genres.
Once established as an emerging talent, she founded Laurie Elyse Design, LLC only months before being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007. Despite the challenges of living with the illness, Ms. Elyse debuted her first runway collection in 2008 and has continued to push artistic and design boundaries creating highly sought-after pieces.
Her new collection, entitled “Bandages” is made entirely from medical supplies, disposable paper patient gowns, gauze, bandages, medical tape, sports wrap, pill bottles, and more. From such unexpected and often unrecognizable sources, Ms. Elyse successfully creates beautiful and feminine pieces.

The severity of this disease was brought home to me by a pediatrician with the Infectious Diseases and International Adoption Program of Winthrop University Hospital who spoke with me at the event. I had mentioned that I had an adopted teenage son. Dr. Paul J. Lee said to me, "Imagine if your son Mathew shared a Coke at school with a friend, contacted meningitis, then came home and simply passed away." I could not clear this image from my mind the entire evening. He told me that he has had nice patients -- all kids -- who have had this happen to them. Two died, and seven had their limbs amputated as a result. "Each of the survivors endured amputations -- some quadruple -- and required extensive and excruciating skin grafting." And the disease is so completely random.
There are a lot of active mothers supporting the National Meningitis Association including Lynn Bozof, the founder and president of the NMA, who came up from her home in Atlanta where there is a local chapter. Her 20-year-old son, Evan, died on April 20, 1998, after less than one month of battling with meningococcal disease, having fallen ill on March 25, 1998. During those 26 days, Evan -- an honor student and pitcher for his university baseball team -- had both arms and legs amputated. His Mom and family had no idea at that time that a vaccine existed that could have saved his life.

With the goal of stopping meningitis worldwide, World Meningitis Day was established as a day to raise awareness about this devastating and potentially life-threatening disease.
On Tuesday 24 April 2012, the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations (CoMO) and its global members are encouraging individuals, families and communities to learn the signs and symptoms of meningitis, the importance of urgent treatment of the disease, and that prevention is available through vaccination against some forms of meningitis as part of its fourth annual World Meningitis Day.
There have been already, and will be today, events throughout the globe to support this effort.
CoMO will start the campaign, “Join Hands Against Meningitis” today. The goal of the campaign is to unite one million people around the world, the same number who will suffer bacterial meningitis this year, to show their support to stop meningitis worldwide.
To do this people will be able to join hands with others across the globe via a virtual online community.
There are many other events to show your support for this cause. Check out CoMO’s list of local member organisations to see if there is a World Meningitis Day event in your country that you can attend and support.
In addition to the events for Tuesday, there were events leading up to World Meningitis Day. This past Sunday in Los Angeles, singer and actress, Tiffany Thornton performed a concert at the Roxy to raise meningitis awareness. Ms. Thornton’s personal story with the disease caused her to become spokesperson for the organization, “Voices of Meningitis” last year.
Monday night at the New York Athletic Club, the National Meningitis Association, Inc. (NMA) held the “Give Kids A Shot!” Gala to raise awareness about meningitis.
The gala featured the reigning Mrs. Ethnic World International 2012 (Mrs. Jamaica), Daisi Pollard Sepúlveda, a meningitis survivor herself. Ms. Sepúlveda wore the signature “Meningitis dress” designed by Laurie Elyse of Laurie Elyse Collection featuring the real stories and photographs of lives touched by meningitis. The dress was auctioned off last night in a silent auction.
To learn more about meningitis and the preventive vaccination available, check out the CDC’s website.

5/10/2010... Laurie Elyse in Alternative Press Magazine this month
4/16/2010... Alternative Press Magazine and Laurie Elyse sponsored VIP Party at Terrace 59 for SXSW
12/18/09... National MS Society

Twenty-four year old, Laurie Elyse's creative spirit emerged at a young age. Always interested in the arts and mixed media, Laurie graduated from The School of Visual Arts in New York City after also attending the Corcoran College of Art in Washington, DC, majoring in 3D design and construction. It was during this time that she developed a reputation for creating functional furniture from used, broken and new musical instrument parts. Such pieces, including a chandelier made from drumsticks, were designed and then sold to benefit The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation (MHOF). (Composer for the filmMr. Holland's Opus founded MHOF to further his commitment to the future of music education.)
Laurie also found early success designing charms and bracelets made from guitar picks, worn by many in the music business. Finding fashion design fulfilling, Laurie then decided to branch into clothing design, centering on rock & roll inspired swim wear. Her first collection premiered at New York Fashion Week Spring 2009, held in September 2008, receiving positive reviews, including one reviewer who noted, "[Elyse's designs] will no doubt make a splash with the rock fashion circle."
In the midst of all her creative endeavors and expansions, however, Laurie began to experience tingling and a loss of sensation in her right hand and arm starting in October 2007.
"At first I thought I had slept funny and if that was the case I was never going to sleep again! When the feelings persisted, I knew something more serious was wrong and my dad drove me to the hospital," relates Laurie.
Several days later, Laurie's symptoms progressed. She had tingling up and down the right side of her body. In addition, she felt sensations in her mouth, gums, nose and face. Her vision was affected. Just four days after her symptoms began, Laurie was diagnosed in the hospital with multiple sclerosis.
"Initially, I felt that my life was ruined. It was so easy to feel truly depressed. Then, I realized it wasn't as grim as I thought. Things happen for a reason and there has to be a reason I got this."
Despite the life changing MS diagnosis, Laurie has not slowed down. She's close with her family, particularly her father, is an animal lover and spends her free time learning languages, collecting classic Barbie outfits (circa 1959) and watching old movies. She also continues to design her swimwear line.
Laurie recognizes the importance of MS education and research so to further the MS movement and help move us closer to a world free of multiple sclerosis, Laurie has designated four swimsuits from her 2010 line whose sale will support the work of the National MS Society. Laurie explains that her MS-inspired collection is full of bright and shimmery colors, which radiate her positive attitude.
"As a MS patient myself I created these looks as a reflection of hope while carrying the image of a brighter tomorrow, a world without MS."
For more information about Laurie Elyse, her youthful and sometimes edgy fashion designs, and the MS swim suit line visit www.laurieelysecollection.com. Click on any picture and this will take you to the order page which features the MS bikini line. Laurie will be donating 20% of each purchase to support the work of the Society.
Since some of the models featured in Laurie's line worked for Vidal Sasson, Laurie’s collection including the MS line will be featured in a calendar that will be displayed at their salons in both Los Angeles and New York.

PR and reviews from the New York Fashion Week Couture Show are starting to leak out...
"Designer Laurie Elyse previewed her grunge glam swimsuit collection for '09. She effectively mixes lace spandex, visqueen and new cuts to add pizzazz to her beachwear. Her self proclaimed "rock & roll design company" is based in Washington, DC and specialized in both wearable designs and furniture.
Her use of lace to create a spider web effect on swimsuit bottoms and checkered visqueen skirt cover will no doubt make a splash with the rock fashion circle. Her designs are carried in music stores throughout the U.S."

9/10/08... Couture Fashion Week Delivered Brilliant Arrogance
Pull Out Your Labels...
Couture Fashion Week New York was delivered with an air of brilliant arrogance that only red hot fashion could sustain.
Friday's events showcased several fantastic designers, most notably, Nedret Taciroglu (Turkey). Her thirty piece collection infusing delicate fabrics from ivory to chocolate with splashes of ruby and coral took us through the decadent ages of times past. The entire weekend sustained this momentum including a silent auction to benefit the Worldwide Children's Foundation of New York and intricate art displays organized by art Director Nanati Taylor.
The sophomoric collection from Katerina Bocci (Albania/USA) featuring a stable of Michigan based models wearing goddess inspired hair and stomping the runway in ruffled collar gowns of gleaming green, silvery taupe, and graduating shades of navy with pops of yellow about the neckline. The designer also featured diamond white pieces with lattice detailing and rhinestone embellishment at hemline.
The evening wrapped with a collection entitled Muses and Nymphs from the esteemed publisher and producer himself, Mr. Andres Aquino (USA). Muses and Nymphs was populated with prints and African themed music. Models adorned with earthy hair wearing nature inspired colors, transformed into whimsical patterns punctuated with colored sequins and pastel colored garments were juxtaposed for ultimate muse impact.
Laurie Elyse (USA) delivered a spin on Vivian Westwood-esque attire using uber-slim to full figured models with tousled updos and gathered fabrics of chambray and denim.
Sushma Patel (India/USA) followed with a take off the traditional saris using gossamer fabrics of cream and ivory with rhinestone detailing about the bust line, mid section and hem.
Cristina Nitopi (Australia) used urban music as the backdrop to a twenty-six piece evening collection celebrating leather pieces for men and vibrant hued dresses for women coupled with muted detailed fabrics.
Romanitza (Romania) delighted the crowd with shimmering fabrics that skimmed the contours of the body effortlessly and had the same brilliance of moonlight on water.
The collections concluded with Indashio (USA). The designer used lightly hued paper-mache clad models with bed head hair and colorful chapeaus to display his vision of the urban jungle and take us full throttle in Spring 2009. Among the models was America's Next Top Model winner cycle eight Jaslene Gonzalez, who closed the show with a constellation style smile and supermodel swagger.
